MOUNTAIN E-BIKE FAQ’S
Are e-bikes allowed on mountain bike trails around Banff?
YES. Our mountain e-bikes are pedal-assist, and allowed on many, but not all, trails around Banff where bikes are permitted. For a full list, check out this list of permitted e-bike trails from Parks Canada.
When you arrive at the shop to pick up your bike rental our knowledgable staff will be happy to help you plan your route for your day(s) of riding.
There are more trail options for non-electric mountain bikes, if you want to compare you can look at this list of mountain bike trails from Parks Canada.
For ease of navigation on the mountain bike trails, we highly recommend downloading the Trailforks app before you arrive. There is a free version that works well.
Can children/ teens rent mountain e-bikes?
Yes, as long as they meet the minimum height requirement of 4’6” children or teens can rent this mountain e-bike. However, e-bikes are heavy, weighing 25 kg (50lbs), so your child must also have sufficient strength to manage one.
If your child is new to mountain biking we also recommend renting a non-electric mountain bike since they are easier to manoeuvre on technical trails while learning.
If your child or teen does not meet the minimum height you can consider renting a kids bike. Bike attachments are not compatible with our mountain e-bike, but can be attached to our road comfort e-bike.
Should I carry bear spray when mountain biking?
When mountain biking you are more likely to have a surprise encounter with animals. We recommend carrying bear spray with you when mountain biking, and knowing how to use it.
Slow down and make noise especially when going through shrubby areas or approaching blind corners.
We have bear spray available for rent or purchase at the shop. You must be 18+ years old to rent or purchase bear spray.
Should I rent the road comfort e-bike or a mountain e-bike?
There are several reasons you may want to rent the Verve+ 3 road comfort e-bike instead of the mountain e-bike:
Verve+ 3 has greater range because of the smooth road tires instead of grippy mountain bike tires (less friction) (typical range of 60-90 km instead of 35-50 km)
Verve+ 3 has a low-entry frame that makes it easier to get on and off, and a kick-stand for easily propping your bike to take photos. It also has a rear rack and fenders.
Verve+ 3 has a more upright, comfortable posture for all-day riding and enjoying the scenery
However, Verve+ 3 is limited to roads and paved pathways, so if you want to explore the gravel or dirt paths or single track mountain biking, this is the bike for you!
Should I rent an electric mountain bike or a regular mountain bike?
There are some reasons you may want to consider renting a non-electric mountain bike instead of an electric mountain bike:
Parks Canada allows non-electric mountain bikes on more trails than it permits electric mountain bikes on. Click on those links to compare.
Electric mountain bikes are significantly heavier than non-electric mountain bikes (approx. 25 kg vs. 15 kg). This can make them more difficult to manoeuvre on single-track trails, especially if you are new to mountain biking.
If you are an advanced rider looking to do technical trails, you will have an easier time with our Trek Fuel EX 5, which has a dropper post and full suspension (140mm front/ 130mm rear).
That said, electric mountain bikes do make it much easier in terms of effort, especially up hills, and make it possible to ride for much longer without getting as fatigued. And honestly, they’re just a whole lot of fun!
I want a workout but my partner or the rest of my party is renting e-bike(s), what should I do?
In our experience, if you are a strong and regular mountain biker, it can work well for you to rent a non-electric mountain bike while other people in the party have mountain e-bikes.
However, for most groups it typically works better for everyone to be on e-bikes. For those who want more of a workout, you can turn the electric-assist down or even off to make the riding more difficult, then turn the assist up if/when you want to make it easier or keep up with the group.
Can I take this mountain e-bike on the Bow Valley Parkway or the Legacy Trail?
If you’re planning to ride on paved surfaces, such as the Bow Valley Parkway to Johnston Canyon and back, or to Canmore and back on the Legacy Trail, you are much better off taking the road comfort e-bike. Due to the increased drag of the mountain bike tires, the mountain e-bike has less range and will not make it to Johnston Canyon and back, or to Canmore and back on a single charge with typical use. The road comfort e-bike is also designed to be more comfortable and easy to ride on paved surfaces than the mountain e-bike.
Can I rent an e-bike for multiple days? How does the charging work?
Yes, you can rent your e-bike for multiple days. One option is to return the bike to our shop each day after riding for us to store and charge overnight. The other option is to store and charge the bike at your hotel or accommodation. If you’re doing the latter, it is important you have a location inside to safely store the bike overnight and where you have access to an outlet for charging the bike. The charging cord is about 8 feet long and plugs directly into the bike from the wall. We will show you how to use the charger when you pick up the bike. For safety/theft reasons, we don’t recommend storing e-bikes outside overnight, even with a bike lock. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact us.
Can I take a mountain e-bike on a Roam bus?
The Powerfly 4 e-bikes weigh approx. 25kg / 55 lbs and are too heavy to safely use on the Roam transit bus bike racks according to their bike policy. A limited number of Roam buses have interior bike racks that can accommodate e-bikes, however you cannot count on those being available. If there is no interior bike rack they will not let you board with your e-bike.
Therefore, if you want to take the Roam bus we recommend renting a non-electric bike.
Contact us if you want to arrange for a custom bike transfer or tour.
